Isha's First Card Day

September 29, 2012

This was her Reading and Language Test. Check out what
was written on the lower left hand corner: independently done.
I didn't know what to feel. There was so much anticipation and yet, so nervous on the side. Yep, i knew how my child was behaving in school for the past months, but the idea of learning more of her misbehavior  made my heart pound a lot faster.

So there we were-- me, my husband and my lil girl in front of all her teachers. It started out right. Her exams were really high. Of her three subjects, two were perfect but her Math had one mistake (I presumed an accidental mistake because she knows her odd and even numbers even in sleep.). Her teachers even pointed out how independent worker my daughter is, which made us really happy. To cut the story short, her academic performance was exemplary! There's no question about that. Imagine that she was graded 4 (4 being the highest) in reasoning ability and memory retentiveness! Such a feat for a four -year old. Now here is the BUT part.......

After all the good news, her teachers started to enumerate what she had been doing for the past months in detail. I listened appallingly, wishing the ground would swallow me up. They ended up saying: Si Isha- wants, gets! which only meant one thing: she's such a spoiled brat!

I was inconsolable at the car. I just didn't know how to handle her that won't make her think that her dad and I do not appreciate her academic achievements. I called my sister, who's much more experienced in raising a child and told her everything. She just gave me a guffaw. Other friends whom I sought for advice didn't take the matter seriously. They even said: "May pinagmanahan!" coupled with a boisterous laugh!

We ended up going to Robinson that day. My husband and I talked to her and we told her that we wouldn't buy toys for her because of the things she did to her classmates and teachers. She was crying-- loudly! But when she asked if we could buy her some books, we consented. We explained that, that was her price for being very good in all her subjects. We also told her what "2" meant, and we presumed she understood us. She made a promise that she will be a good girl from then on.

It has been nine days since Isha's card day, and thank God that until now, she has been behaving very well in school.
